Cholesterol Testing

Royal Docks Pharmacy has been specifically selected to provide Cardiovascular assessments within the Newham area.

Testing involves a initial questionnaire, height and weight check, followed by a blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar check.

Questionnaire

The questionnaire assess certain eligibilities for inclusion, customers requesting the test must not suffer from Heart disease, Stroke, Diabetes or Hypertension (as these will be extensively covered by your GP).
Customers must live within the Newham area or registered with a Newham GP as well as allowing for test results to be shared with their GP.

Height & Weight Check

Measuring height and weight allows for a BMI to be calculated. BMI stands for Body Mass Index, it indicates whether a persons weight falls within a healthy range for their height.
Measurements are also taken for the waist where waist measurements are a sign of weight distribution, a good indicatior of future health problems.

Blood Pressure Testing

Measuring blood pressure also gives another way of assessing how healthy you are, the results are instant and very easy to interpret. High blood pressure is mostly without symptoms, making it nearly impossible to detect without a blood pressure check.

Blood sugar test

A random blood sugar test can also determine how well your body maintains a healthy level of sugar in your bloodstream. A consistantly high level may be a sign of Diabetes, where a fasting blood sugar test may be required to rule out any possibilities.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol level is also a good indicator of how healthy your current condition is. Cholesterol is split into two main categories, LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein).
An overall cholesterol level (Total Cholesterol, also known as TC) solely is not a good indicator of how healthy you are, mainly because LDL and HDL cholesterol both work in different ways. LDL is seen as 'Bad' cholesterol while HDL is seen as 'Good' cholesterol, therefore a person with a high total cholesterol may be healthy if it is mainly made up of a good proportion of the 'Good' cholesterol.

Here at Royal Docks Pharmacy the results are broken down into plain english and easy to interpret results.

Cholesterol testing is available without an appointment.
