Smoking Cessation

Ever since the Smoking Ban in the UK, which was implemented on the 1st July 2007, there has been a greater impetus to give up smoking. The ban and the impoved health benifits from quitting has encouraged more and more people to seek new ways of quitting.

To suceed in giving up smoking it may take more than willpower alone, which is why Royal Docks Pharmacy gives customers an opportunity to join our Smoking Cessation service to aid quitting smoking.

Smoking can unfortunately result in:

  • Cancer

  • Lung disease

  • Heart disease

  • Circulatory disease (COPD)

  • Raised Blood Pressure

  • Birth defects1

Smoking has been shown to cause over 100,000 deaths in the UK each year.2
Stopping smoking for just 24 hours can have immediate effects on moderate to heavy smokers where quitting for 20 or more years can put the risk of a smoker acquiring heart disease on the same par as a non smoker.

Royal Docks Pharmacy gives the opportunity for smokers an aid in quitting, from words of wisdom to words of encouragement, it all goes a long way to enable a smoker to quit.

The products available for a smoker to aid in quitting can be placed into two categories, NRT products (Nicotine Replacement Therapy) or Champix tablets.

Champix tablets do not contain nicotine, but act in the brain taking away the pleasure feeling that comes with smoking a cigarette. Once that feeling of pleasure is taken away, the final step that needs to be overcome is the actual dependancy on the habit. Changin your routine, such as avoiding places where you used to smoke, removing ashtrays from the house can help in breaking the habit.

The NRT products available are:

  • Patches

  • Lozenges

  • Nasal Sprays

  • Chewing gum

  • Microtabs, and

  • Nicotine Inhalator

These products are available for quitters to use to aid the quitting process. As relapses are not uncommon, alternative products and help are offered to smokers who need that little more encouragement.

All this can go a long way to improving your health.
